Venture 3 miles to find yourselves on the fringes of the splendid Lake District National Park. Head 12.5 miles to charming Pooley Bridge to board a steamer on Ullswater, then hop off at Aira Force to see the spectacular 20-metre waterfall. Discover this area on foot too by following the 20-mile Ullswater Way. For a change of scenery from slate to limestone, the Westmorland Dales extension of the Yorkshire Dales National Park begins just 1/4 mile from the cottage at plantation woodland , home to red squirrels. The newly designated Coast to Coast long distance footpath also passes within 1.5 miles. Head into Appleby -in Westmorland (9.5 miles), Penrith (11.5 miles), Kirkby Stephen (17 miles) or Keswick (31 miles) to potter in the shops and dine out.
