Arkengarthdale is ever popular with walkers. The wild, rugged and varied scenery provides miles of walks, both low-level, through the hamlets of Whaw and Langthwaite offering gentle strolls along the river and more challenging high-level walks. With high mountains and valleys lined with streams, there are endless footpaths around the most spectacular scenery. The area is increasingly popular with cyclists and the nearby Dales Bike Centre offers cycle hire. The ’Swale Trail’ runs from Reeth to Keld and is ideal for families. At the end of a long day of exploring, the cottage is within a short stroll of the local 18th century Inn serving local ales and an excellent selection of food. Just 7 miles further, the road climbs slowly up the valley to eventually reach the highest pub in England, the Tan Hill Inn. There are an abundance of places to visit from here. Reeth, with a pub serving good food within 1 mile, cafés, gift shop and ice cream parlour, is just 3 miles away. The historic town of Richmond, famous for its castle and Georgian theatre, is around a 30-minute drive, or make a journey over the Stang to the market town of Barnard Castle, with a bustling high street, independent shops, restaurants, antique shops and famous Bowes Museum. Driving across into Wensleydale takes you to the market towns of Hawes and Leyburn, with a host of attractions located in the surrounding area. The Forbidden Corner in Middleham is only 16 miles away.
